Welcome!

The Lucan Area Heritage, a non-profit organization, was formed in the April 1995, and got its start in the old Ford Dealership Building on Main Street, Lucan, Ontario, in Hank Arnold's show-room.  We gathered historical artifacts and displayed them every Saturday afternoon for public viewing.

Our first big fund raiser was selling Cash Calendars with a prize drawn every day of the year. In two years, we had a profit of about $25,000.00. Other fundraisers include: Ride Back in Time, Heritage Dinners, Heritage Festivals, Bus Tours, selling scrap metal, and awesome auction sales, and of course, many private donations.

In the fall of 1998, we purchased a lot with a two-car garage from Dr. Lock, and by February 1999, we had it and our log cabin in good enough shape to move in.

       Our Museum Display Includes:

History of 12 original schoolhouses, 2 central schools,
Lucan High School, & Medway High School
Several family histories
Histories of businesses past & present
Histories of sports
Women's Institute scrap books
Records of past activities of our museum
Records of cemeteries in Biddulph
Souvenirs & books for sale

REMEMBERING OUR PAST
TO ESTABLISH OUR FUTURE!

Building On A Rich History:
The Lucan Area Heritage Association operates a museum dedicated to the preservation and retelling of the most famous historical events of the area. Events such as Lucan's role in the rich story of the underground railway known as the Wilberforce Settlement, continued development of the area by Irish settlers, and the infamous Donnelly massacre are key chapters in our history and a vital part of our future.

Preserving Our Past:
Preserving and maintaining important artifacts associated with historical events is desperately needed. Generous donations and a growing collection have resulted in insufficient space. The existing museum does not meet the standards set by the Ministry of Culture for preserving historical artifacts. Students and historians cannot study documents and artifacts in one location.

Our Unique Story:
Interest in the Donnellys has always been strong, right from the first reports in the London Advertiser in February 1880. Hundreds of visitors a year currently come to the museum, and this web site has thousands of visitors a year, all pointing to the unique marketing opportunity we have in our community. Interest is high and will increase with the appropriate venue.

Today's Challenge:

  • preserve and maintain our artifact collection for future generations
  • meet the standards of the Ministry of Culture for preservation
  • interactive school programs are needed to engage youth
  • need for one location for artifacts and documents for study by historians and students
  • community requires flexible space for events like art exhibits or theatrical performances
  • need for barrier free access
The New Museum:
The new 12,000 square foot museum will be located in the heart of Lucan on Main Street, and could be a vital component of revitalization for the area. It will be built on the site of the former historic Central Hotel (circa 1846), lost to a fire in the 1990s. The face will replicate this historic building, complete with second storey and balcony.
